Together Everyone Achieves More
Young Carers
At Fleetdown Primary Academy, we are aware that some children face additional challenges in their lives outside of school. Some children are involved in the support and care of family members which places additional pressure on them at a young age. At Fleetdown we believe it is important to identify these children so as they can receive the support that they need to succeed in school. Our Family Liaison Officer works with Young Carers at Fleetdown to ensure that they know they are not alone.
Young carers may engage in:
- Practical tasks (cooking, housework and shopping)
- Physical care (lifting or helping someone use the stairs)
- Personal care (dressing, washing, helping with toilet needs)
- Managing the family budget (collecting benefits and prescriptions)
- Managing medication
- Looking after younger siblings
- Helping someone communicate
If you feel that your child may be classed as a Young Carer, please contact Mrs Braniff or Mrs Hassett to discuss how we can help.
Who else can help?
Imago and Kent Young carers are organisations that can support and show children that they are not alone in their caring role.
Kent Young Carers is the countywide service for Young Carers aged 5-18 across Kent. Young Carers are taking on caring responsibilities for a family member with a long-term illness, disability, mental health or substance misuse issue.
KYC works with schools, communities, and statutory and voluntary agencies to identify hidden young carers. Following assessment, KYC offer a range of short-term interventions including signposting, one-to-one support, in school support and workshops.
Referrals to both Imago and Kent Young Carers can be made by children, parents or a range of professionals.
