Term 6 – Oh I do like to be besides the seaside
This term, our topic is 'Oh I do like to be besides the seaside'. We will be learning about this topic through our foundation subjects. This term, we will be comparing a local town in England with a contrasting one in a
different country. Learning to name, describe and compare features of their own locality to
another named place. We will speak about how they have found out about the past. Using words and phrases such as recently, before, after, now and
later. We will use this information to describe changes within living memory and aspects of change in national life.
In science, we will be working scientifically. We will: ask simple questions, recognising that they can be answered in different ways; observe closely, using simple equipment: perform simple tests and use observations and ideas to suggest answers to questions.
In maths, we will be consolidating our knowledge of the four operations. We will also recap our units we have previo Taught ensuring we are using our reasoning and problem solving skills. Please continue to watch the links posted weekly on ClassDojo to support your child with these skills.
In English, our writing will be based around 'There's a Rantang in my bedroom' and 'Five children and IT'. We will be ensuring we are confident when using the year 2 grammar and punctuation is used accurately within our writing.
Term 5 – Inspiring Individuals
This term, our topic is Inspiring Individuals'. We will be learning about this topic through our foundation subjects. This term, we will be learning about Florence Nightingale and recalling the key events in her life and learning about the reasons that influenced Florence Nightingale to go to the Crimea War. We will also be experimenting with through our art skills with tones. We will be using different pencils to practice shading, drawing through observations and transferring these skills when using pastels and charcoal.
In science, we will be learning about plants. This includes learning about the growth of plants from a seed or bulb as well as the things that a plant needs to stay healthy. This will also include germination and reproduction in plants.
In maths, we will be consolidating our knowledge of the four operations. We will also recap our fractions unit and explore time; being able to tell the time on both a digital and analogue clock. Please continue to watch the links posted weekly on ClassDojo to support your child with these skills.
In English, our writing will be based around Little People Big Dreams. We are going to be looking at three individuals lives. We will be writing a set of instructions, a persuasive letter and a biography, along with ensure we are confident when using the year 2 grammar and punctuation is used accurately within our writing.
Term 4 - From Field to Fork
This term, our topic is 'From Field to Fork'. We will be learning about this topic through our foundation subjects. This term, we will be developing our DT skills and focusing on cooking and nutrition. We will be able to explain the difference between soup and stew, learn about a range of tools used to puree food: blender, hand blender, mortar and pestle, potato masher, know how to blend hot food safely, describing how food is farmed, home-grown and caught.
In science, our topic is Everyday materials. We have lots of hands on experiments to test the properties of different materials. We will be focusing on working scientifically to explore materials in more depth.
In maths, we will be starting our length and shapes units. We will be consolidating our addition and subtraction skills during mental maths. Please continue to watch the links posted weekly on ClassDojo to support your child with these skills.
In English, our writing will be based around The bee who could speak. We will be writing many genres and linking our GPS skills to these. We will write a news paper report or create a missing poster, a setting and a character description and a poem ensuring we are using the correct author voice for each.
We also have World Book Day where we will enjoy a Comic Workshop.
Term 3 - Going with the Flow
This term, our topic is 'Going with the Flow'. We will be learning about this topic through our foundation subjects. This term, we will be developing our geography skill and learning to identify key features of a location, looking at the differences between human and physical features. We will develop our skills when using maps, atlases and globes to locate and name the 5 oceans and 7 continents. We will then zoom into the united Kingdom and look at it surrounding areas. We will also be working on our DT skills and learning how to sew a fish thinking about what equipment will we need.
In science, our topic is 'Animal and their habitats'. We will look at how animals have off spring, food chains, the basic needs for survival and the importance of a healthy diet and how to stay to stay fit.
In maths, we will be starting our money unit. Please help your child to explore coins and notes when you are out shopping thinking about what change you would get if you paid with a £1 for example. We will then move onto our fractions unit, looking at 1/2, 1/4, 2/4 and 1/3 and non unit fractions linked to these.
In English, our writing will be based around two key texts; Pattan's Pumpkin and Zerraffa Giraffa. We will be writing many genres and linking our GPS skills to these. We will write postcards, bedtime stories, poetry and formal letters ensuring we are using the correct author voice for each.
Term 2 - 'London's Calling'
This term, our topic is 'London's Calling'. We will be learning about this topic through our foundation subjects. This term, we will be learning about The Great Fire of London. We will start with an enquiry and take on the role as detectives to discover when, where and why the Great Fire of London broke out. We will look at evidence, and ask and answer questions such as; Why did the Great Fire burn down so many houses? and Could more have been done to slow the spread of the fire? We will also develop our art and design skills to paint using tones and tints to create a Great Fire painting and design and build our own Pudding Lane.
In science, our topic is Everyday materials. We have lots of hands on experiments to test the properties of different materials.
In maths, we will be starting our multiplication and division unit. We will have hands on a practical activities planned to show how we group and share objects. Before moving onto statistics before Christmas.
In English, our writing will be based around Oliver Twist. We will be writing in role, describing characters and writing a persuasive piece.
We of course also have our Christmas production.
Term 1 - 'We're Going to the Zoo'
This term, our topic is ‘We're Going to the Zoo’. We will be learning about this topic through our foundation subjects and will be doing lots of exciting activities including looking at the history of zoos, building an animal enclosure and debating on whether zoos ever have a positive impact. To support this learning, we have arranged an exciting trip to Wingham Wildlife Park on Tuesday 11th October 2022.
In art we will be using clay to create animal enclosures. We are sure the children will greatly enjoy getting their hands messy! Science will focus on living things and their habitats. In PSHE, we will be learning to communicate and co-operate with others. We will also think about how we can look after our local environment.
The children will learn about place value in maths. Our maths lessons are always hands-on as we believe this is the best way for children to learn! It is important for the children to be able to solve problems in practical ways.
Our writing lessons will be focusing on writing narratives in first and third person, diary entries and writing an alternative ending. The children will also build on their skills learnt in year 1, recognising the non-negotiables in punctuation and using them accurately in their writing.
We have a very busy term planned with lots of exciting experiences for the children to get involved in!
