Music and Signing Choir
We aim to provide a varied musical education at Fleetdown Primary school, introducing children to the joy of music and the value in performing with others. We follow the national curriculum attainment targets, focusing on the three main areas of performing, composing and appraising. Specialised instrumental tuition is given in Year 3 and 5.
We are heavily involved with the Wider Opportunities project, which allows for a whole year group to receive professional tuition of a musical instrument for free. This year, the whole of Year 3 are receiving specialized violin tuition. Each child has their own individual instrument which they may take home to practice. All of this is provided at no cost to the children. Eventually, it is hoped that some of these children will then continue with tuition in Year 4, whereby paid tuition is provided by Kent Music School. The school has a long track history of “continuers” and violins remain a popular instrument for private tuition in the school. These children are given the opportunity to perform in the annual carol concert or the Shine concert (see below).
Highlighting our school’s commitment to deaf awareness, we also have the Signing Choir. Children in both Key Stages 1 and 2 are given the opportunity to perform to the community. For example at Christmas, the choir perform to residents of a local nursing home. They also perform at the annual Carol concert and Shine concert.
We also provide opportunities for our children to perform at a national level. The Junior Choir have performed at both Wembley and the O2 arenas with the Young Voices Choir and Voice in a Million choir. These provide once in a lifetime chances for children to sing at a major national venue and perform with professional musicians as well as children from schools across the country.
The highlights of the musical year include the Christmas productions, the upper School Carol Concert, the Year 6 summer production and the Shine concert. The Shine concert provides a true culmination of all the musical activities taking place at the school. Last year we had irish dancing, gymnastics, individual instrumental performances, our Folk group, violinists and all three choirs: Junior choir, Signing Choir and the Infant Choir.
KS2 /Signing Choir
KS2 signing choir meet every Tuesday and Thursday lunch time from 12.20 – 1.20pm. This club is open to years 3 – 6.
The choir perform to our local community and raise money for charity.
This is a very popular and successful choir who have signed at The Orchard Theatre, Dartford, Wembley Arena and St. Paul’s Church, Covent Garden, London.
British Sign Language (BSL) is the sign language used in the United Kingdom (UK), and is the first or preferred language of some deaf people in the UK; there are 125,000 deaf adults in the UK who use BSL plus an estimated 20,000 children.
In 2011 15,000 people, living in England and Wales, reported themselves using BSL as their main language.
The language makes use of space and involves movement of the hands, body, face and head. Many thousands of people who are not deaf also use BSL, as hearing relatives of deaf people, sign language interpreters or as a result of other contact with the British deaf community.
